Privacy policy
This policy explains what personal data Kit Hound collects, why, and how you can ask us about it. We keep it short and honest, and we only describe things the app and website actually do today.
Who we are
The data controller is Alan Nisbet trading as Kit Hound, based in Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom.
UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply.
What this covers
- The public website at kithound.com (including the waitlist form)
- The Kit Hound Android app (currently version 0.1.x, distributed as a test build and later via Google Play)
- The lookup worker at kithound.asnisbet.workers.dev, which the app calls for MOT / registration lookups and data-plate reading
Data we collect
1. Website waitlist
When you join the waitlist we ask for:
- Name and email address (required)
- Phone number (optional)
- What kit or vehicles you have, roughly how many, and which GPS tracker brand you already use, if any (optional)
- Your consent to be emailed about the launch
We also store, automatically:
- Country (from Cloudflare), the page referrer, and a short browser user-agent string
- A rate-limit record keyed by connection, so bots cannot flood the form — we do not keep a raw IP address on your waitlist record
Sign-ups are stored in Cloudflare KV. Each new or updated sign-up also triggers an alert email to us (from [email protected] to the Kit Hound inbox) so we can reply to you.
Lawful basis: consent (UK GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)), for launch updates. You can withdraw consent any time by emailing us.
2. Inside the Kit Hound app
Most of what you enter stays on your phone, in a local SQLite database. That includes:
- Your display name and phone number (set during onboarding)
- Vehicle and machine details you add (make, model, registration, serial / VIN, colour, hours or mileage, MOT and tax dates, photos, notes)
- Logbook entries, reminders, theft-mode notes and alert history
- Location labels and coordinates that belong to a vehicle, alert or theft record you create (today these come from the built-in demo tracker or from details you type yourself — live GPS trackers are not connected yet)
- Your bark / notification preference
Local notifications (including the woof bark) are scheduled on the device. The app does not register a push-notification token with Kit Hound or any third-party push service.
The app asks for camera and photo-library permission so you can photograph number plates, data plates, V5Cs and receipts for the logbook. Microphone access is not used.
3. Lookups the app sends to our worker
When you use these features, the app sends a short request to our Cloudflare Worker:
- Registration / MOT lookup — the UK registration mark you typed or scanned. We query the DVSA MOT history API (and, when configured, the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service) and return the result to your phone. We do not keep a lasting copy of your lookups on our servers.
- Data-plate reading — a photo of a plate, number plate or V5C. The image is processed by Cloudflare Workers AI (or a configured vision API) to extract the text, then discarded. We do not run a photo archive.
Lawful basis: legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) — providing the feature you asked for — and, where a look-up involves personal data linked to a vehicle you control, performance of the service you are using.
4. Website analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics on kithound.com. It is privacy-friendly and does not use cross-site advertising cookies. It tells us roughly how many real people visit the site.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your data
- We do not use your waitlist details for advertising networks
- We do not require an account to try the current app build — your yard book lives on the device
- Bring-your-own GPS tracking is marked “coming soon”; when it ships we will update this policy before any live tracker location is processed on our servers
Who we share data with
We use a small set of processors to run the service:
- Cloudflare — website hosting (Pages), waitlist storage (KV), email routing / worker mail, Web Analytics, and the lookup / plate-reading Worker (including Workers AI where used)
- DVSA (and, when enabled, DVLA) — official UK vehicle and MOT data, only when you request a registration lookup
- Google Play — if you install from the Play Store, Google’s own terms and privacy policy also apply to the store and device services
We may share information if the law requires it, or to protect someone’s safety.
International transfers
Cloudflare operates a global network. Where personal data is processed outside the UK, Cloudflare’s UK / EU data-protection terms and transfer tools apply. DVSA and DVLA lookups are UK government services.
How long we keep it
- Waitlist — until you ask us to remove you, or until Kit Hound has launched and we have finished contacting founding members (we will then delete or anonymise leftover waitlist rows)
- App data on your phone — until you clear app storage or uninstall. Uninstalling removes the local database
- Lookup and plate-reading requests — processed in flight; not kept as a user archive
- Operational logs — short-lived Cloudflare logs used for security and debugging
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask us to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct it
- Delete it
- Restrict or object to certain processing
- Receive a copy in a portable form (where applicable)
- Withdraw waitlist consent
Email [email protected] and we will respond within one month. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
Children
Kit Hound is aimed at adults looking after vehicles and machines. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 16.
Security
We use HTTPS everywhere, store waitlist rows in Cloudflare KV with access limited to the Kit Hound project, rate-limit the waitlist form, and keep secrets out of the app binary where possible. No method of transmission or storage is perfect; if we ever have a breach that risks your rights, we will tell you and the ICO as the law requires.
Payments
The founding price is £2.99 a month. When paid subscriptions go live they will be handled by Google Play Billing and/or Stripe. Those providers are controllers or processors of payment data under their own terms — Kit Hound does not see your full card number.
Changes
If we add accounts, cloud sync, or live GPS tracking, we will update this page before those features process new personal data, and we will say what changed. The “Last updated” date at the top always shows the current version.
